About Our Client
Oriel College
Oriel College is a constituent college of the University of Oxford and the fifth-oldest, founded in 1326 by King Edward II. It is the oldest royal foundation in Oxford. The College occupies a historic site on Oriel Square, with the Grade I listed Front Quad — completed in 1642 — one of the finest examples of Jacobean Gothic architecture in England. Oriel has educated two Nobel Prize winners and a long line of distinguished scholars, statesmen and writers.

Why Oriel College Trusts Brierty Decoration
Decorating within a Grade I listed Oxford college leaves no room for compromise on materials, colour or workmanship. Oriel's estate — from the Jacobean Front Quad to its surrounding listed townhouses — relies on a decorator who understands heritage paint systems, can match historic colour schemes accurately, and can deliver complete works within the narrow windows of the Oxford vacations. That is exactly the brief Brierty Decoration is built for.
The Project
Oriel College was founded in 1326 by King Edward II as the House of the Blessed Mary at Oxford, making it the oldest royal foundation in the University. Today it occupies a beautiful site on Oriel Square, with its famous Jacobean Front Quad — completed in 1642 — recognised as one of the finest enclosed quadrangles in Oxford.
The estate spans medieval foundations, Jacobean and Georgian additions, the Grade I listed chapel and hall, and a network of Grade II listed townhouses around Oriel Square and Merton Street. Every redecoration project requires sympathetic colour work and careful coordination with listed building consents.
Brierty Decoration has carried out interior and exterior decoration across the College, including panelled rooms, common rooms, staircases and student accommodation. Our team is accustomed to the constraints of working within a Grade I listed environment — protecting historic plaster, panelling and joinery while delivering finishes that look freshly applied for years to come.
We use traditional materials where the building demands them — breathable lime-friendly systems, heritage oil eggshells and conservation-grade paints — alongside modern coatings where they belong. The result is decoration that honours the College's seven centuries of history without ever looking precious.
